Reading by Doing for Kids Workshops: What is it and How it Helps Your Kids

Reading by Doing for Kids

Reading by Doing is one of a kind escapade where readers immerse themselves into a reading (for the first half of the workshop) and then engage in hand-on activities and collaborative projects around the book creating an immersive experience for themselves.

What is the significance of Reading by Doing?

Reading by Doing reinforces and solidifies the understanding of characters, theme, settings, learning, etc. They have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of story noticing details, connecting better with the book.

During the first half of the Reading by Doing workshop, participants immerse themselves in the selected book. They are encouraged to absorb every detail, allowing themselves to be transported into the world crafted by the author. Through guided readings and discussions, readers gain a comprehensive understanding of the text, exploring its characters, themes, and underlying messages.

What does a Reading by Doing workshop look like?

In Reading by Doing workshops the atmosphere buzzes with creativity, anticipation, eagerness! The children gather around the storyteller with bulged out eyes and little hands clasped under their chins, shoulders inched forward waiting for story to unfurl in an enchanted circle. The storyteller spins the web of words and pitcher of pictures, and transports these curious minds to an extraordinary world. Once the story ends, children are given time to browse through a small exhibition set up in every workshop based on the theme of the workshop. They curiously rustle through the pages of additional titles, and plethora of choices available in the world of reading.

The participants then head to the activity stations. The facilitators weave a string of activities around the characters, settings, learnings and theme of the book that leave lasting impressions on the participants’ minds. As the activities unfold, the room becomes a hub of creativity and collaboration. Children share ideas, solve challenges together, and marvel at each other’s creations. It’s not just about absorbing information from a book; it’s about actively engaging with the material, applying it in real-world scenarios, and learning through hands-on experience.

What is an immersive experience in Reading by Doing workshops?

Following the immersive reading experience, participants transition into hands-on activities as the next step in ‘Reading by Doing’ tailored to the themes and concepts explored in the book. These activities may include art projects, role-playing exercises, or even culinary adventures inspired by the story's setting or cuisine. By engaging their senses and creativity, readers deepen their connection to the text, discovering new layers of meaning and interpretation.

And then comes the hour of the grand reveal. Children gather around a makeshift stage,

excitement bubbling in the air. One by one, each group presents their creations and discoveries, while discreetly working on their presentation skills. Applause fills the room as the young presenters beam with pride.
